Plaza Rotarians Roger Samuel and Jerry Venters (pictured) raised almost $13,000 for Rotary's worldwide "This Close" campaign to eradicate polio, the world's worst crippling disease, by playing 100 holes of golf on September 15 in the first-ever District 6040 Pars v. Polio Golf Marathon and . After playing a quick 80 holes at Liberty Hills Country Club north of Liberty, Roger and Jerry dashed off to Lakewood Oaks Country Club in Lee's Summit for another quick 20 holes with Independence Rotarian Greg Finke, who played 108 holes.

By obtaining pledges and contributions from Plazans, other Rotarians and friends and relatives, Jerry ($8,599) and Roger ($4,392) came within a whisker of hitting $13,000.  Combined with the $1,800 donated by Plaza Centurions this year, the club has raised almost $15,000 for the polio eradication campaign and Pars v. Polio. That will produce another $30,000 in 2-for-1 matching contributions from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Thanks to all who have pledged or contributed, and congratulations Roger and Jerry on a very successful Golf Marathon!!
