Welcome Katie Lindgren!

Our guest this week is Katie Lindgren. She will be speaking about Horizon Academy, the only accredited program of its kind in the Kansas City area dedicated to providing evidence-based learning strategies in an educational environment where students with learning disabilities from grades 1-12 can experience academic and social success.

Katie has an Master of Public Administration from UMKC and past experience as a grant writer and educator.  She began working for Horizon Academy in 2012 with the high school program.  In the summer of 2013, she implemented Horizon Academy's first Leadership Challenge Week, helping high school students with learning disabilities to become better community stewards and volunteers.

She is now Horizon Academy's Development Director, working to cultivate new and continued relationships and opportunities for Horizon Academy students and the community through friend-raising, mentor-ship, and fundraising.

Are you in?

It’s our annual Shoes for Orphan Souls Drive and we seem to be in a bit of a lull. Our grand total this week is exactly the same as it was last week.

Not that we should despair — we’re actually close to meeting our goal — just 677 pair to go. We can also use donations. Please bring shoes and checks (Made out to Plaza Rotary Foundation, please) to any meeting.

Meanwhile, Shoo-Ins and Royal Blue Suede Shoes — are you really gonna let the Shoe-Shoe-Be-Doos keep the lead for another week? Seriously?

Please help with
Wine Basket

The Plaza club has a tradition of contributing a wine basket to the silent auction at the Foundation Dinner, which is this Saturday.

As of Wednesday, we may have a total of four bottles. To meet our commitment, we need eight more.

If you can see the way to contributing a bottle and bringing it to the meeting on Friday, that would be awesome!  White, red, rose … all are welcome. Thank you.

Olympic Tales
at Movie Night
Wanna go to the movies with some Plaza Rotarian friends?

Our next movie night is Thursday, March 3. Meet up at Brio’s Tuscan Grille on the Plaza at 5:30 p.m. to socialize before walking over to Cinemark Palace at the Plaza. There are two movies starting at 7 p.m. — choose between Eddie the Eagle and Race

Both movies are based on Olympic stories: Race is the story of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics, winning gold against the backdrop of Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. Eddie the Eagle is the feel-good tale of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an unlikely British ski jumper and his showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
