Women for Women International

Come welcome Shelley Lowery, a Women for Women International Ambassador and recently crowned Mrs. Kansas City 2016.

Shelley has been involved with non-profit work for over 30 years and lived in Sri Lanka for six years helping rebuild after the 2004 tsunami.  She is going to talk to us about her work through Women for Women International in helping rebuild lives torn apart by natural disasters and armed conflicts.

Tie one on

Shoe Captain Frances Reddis has a whole lotta shoes sitting in her garage that need to be tied together into pairs and boxed for shipment.  Following the wisdom that many hands make light work, she is throwing a tying/boxing party at her house this coming Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.  Come enjoy the camaraderie and a good job well done.  Frances’s address is 1219 SW Wintergreen Lane in Blue Springs.

RYLA Blowout

That’s Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, and they are on a roll.  In response to strong growth in applicants in recent years the Academy is slated to grow from 100 students to 130 this year, on its way to a goal of 200.  Thanks to this new trajectory, clubs are now free to sponsor more than one student.  In the past the Plaza Rotary Club has had as many as four applicants and had to scramble to enlist other clubs to adopt them.

This year we had five applicants and thanks to the Westmoreland B&B raffle, Change for Charity and generous donations by Jerry Venters and Alex Petrovic the Plaza Rotary Club is going to sponsor three of them ourselves.  The two others will also be able to attend thanks to the Downtown and Eastern Independence clubs.

Our attendees are Emma Boxx and Sloane Smith (daughter of Gary and granddaughter of Jerry) from St. Teresa’s Academy and Juliet Holmes from Shawnee Mission East.  Congratulations to each of them and thank you to the clubmembers who let them know of this opportunity and encouraged them to apply.

Emma and Sloane are pictured below volunteering at Morning Glory Ministries, one of the service projects of the St. Teresa’s Interact Club.  From left to right: Gabrielle Pesek, Sloane Smith, Emma Boxx.

Royal Blue Suede Shoes gaining ground

While the Shoo-ins were apparently taking their name too literally, third place Royal Blue Suede Shoes has edged into second place.  Here’s the score after last week’s meeting:
