Wealth Building in America: How to Establish Financial Capability, Economic Mobility & Break the Cycle of Poverty in KC

This week's speaker Greg Housel is a member of the Community Affairs Department of the FDIC.

He currently organizes the Alliance for Economic Inclusion and lends FDIC support to many initiatives in metropolitan Kansas City that foster financial capability and economic mobility for low and moderate-income families.

He came to the FDIC after nearly five years of service to the Housing Authority of Kansas City, MO.  At the housing authority he managed the homeownership and financial education programs enabling nearly 1,000 families to complete the Money Smart Financial Education Program and help more than 150 families to purchase homes.

Note, this is our last meeting in November.  There will be no meeting next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

President Jane Brown Joins Ranks of RLI Graduates

“Great program, (I) learned a great deal.”
“I learned so much that will be helpful for me in my future leadership responsibilities.”
“Loved the event…(C)an’t wait to go to the next level.”
“Very worthwhile and inspiring presentations.”
“RLI allowed me to meet dynamic Rotarians and gain knowledge from their successes.”

This is what District Rotarians are saying about the Rotary Leadership Institute, and on Nov. 7 Plaza Club President Jane Brown joined Lisa Deatherage as the second Plaza Rotarian to become an RLI graduate.  Now in its second year in District 6040, the leadership program has graduated 15 Rotarians, and more than 30 others – including Plazans Randy Steinman and Eric Wymore – have completed portions of the course.

RLI consists of three full days of facilitated learning led by experienced District Rotarians.  The sessions cover such things as leadership skills, attracting and engaging members, creating service projects, The Rotary Foundation, and much more.  Sessions are currently held on Saturdays in Chillicothe, and the cost is $70 per session. The next classes will be held on April 23, 2016.

Correction

The story in last week’s At-a-Glance about the man who turned Armistice Day into Veteran’s Day reported that he was from Montgomery Alabama and that our own Jennifer Kile is a former member of the Montgomery Rotary Club.  Jennifer contacted your editor to point out (nicely) that it was Birmingham in both cases.  This is a little like confusing Kansas City with Jefferson City – our apologies for being so geographically challenged!
