Urban Rangers, Shelter Box Chosen as Primary Beneficiaries

In voting by Plaza Rotarians earlier this month, the Urban Rangers Corps was chosen as the primary Community Service beneficiary for 2013-14 and Shelter Box was chosen as the primary International Service beneficiary.  As primary beneficiaries, they will receive the first contributions raised through the club's fundraising efforts in the coming year.  The Urban Rangers work to prepare at-risk inner city youth for productive adult lives through summer work projects and educational assistance.  Shelter Box was started in 2000 by a Rotary club in England and provides relief to disaster victims by providing large green boxes containing a tent for 10 persons, cooking equipment, and tools to enable them to have shelter and warmth while disaster recovery takes place.  The Urban Rangers Corps was nominated by Jerry Venters and Shelter Box was nominated by Jeff Deatherage.

The runners-up in the club voting will also receive assistance from the club as funds permit. The runners-up were Cristo Rey High School, Hope House, Harvesters, Niles Home for Children, and Ozanam in Community Service, and Malawi Children's Village and Engineers Without Borders in International Service. "All of these charity beneficiaries are very deserving of our support," 2013-14 President Debra Anderson said.  "Hopefully, through our Plaza Rotary Foundation, we can provide smaller grants to those that weren't selected as the primary beneficiaries."
