This Week: "Understanding Extremism in Pakistan"

Dr. ImageHaroon Ullah, a member of Secretary of State John Kerry's policy planning staff at the U. S. State Department, where he focuses on public diplomacy and countering violent extremism, will speak about understanding Islamic parties, political violence, and extremism in Pakistan. An American of Pakistani descent, Dr. Ullah has worked for the State Department in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he has studied and researched the complex factors that affect governance, elections, and democratization in Muslim-majority countries. He will offer new perspectives on America's most important relationships in South Asia and the Middle East. Dr. Ullah is the author of two books: "Vying for Allah's Vote" and "The Bargain From the Bazaar," the latter a story of an ordinary middle-class family in Pakistan caught up in the extraordinary challenges facing the country.
