Tiny homes for veterans

Veterans Community Project is dedicated to supporting every man and woman who took the oath for our country. We are determined to make a difference in the lives of homeless Veterans, a task accomplished by the community for the community.

We are building a specialized community of tiny-homes and onsite services to provide housing stability and address the underlying cause of the Veteran’s homelessness.

UMKC Men's Basketball

Kareem Richardson enters his fifth season at the helm of the UMKC program in 2017-18 and has led the Roos to unprecedented success during his tenure. He was named the head coach at UMKC on March 19, 2013, becoming the sixth in the Division I era at UMKC.

Richardson guided the 2016-17 UMKC squad to the second-most victories in a season (18) in school history. The Roos were selected for a postseason tournament for the first time in the program's 30-year Division I history, which included a victory over Green Bay in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational. In 2016-17, UMKC set program records for points (2,691), field goals (911), rebounds (1,213), defensive rebounds (860), 3-pointers (315) and free throws (554). The Roos finished second in team history in assists (451) and third in steals (236). UMKC posted the longest winning streak for the program in 12 years from Jan. 31 – Feb. 18, 2017. The Roos got off to the program's best start in 15 years and advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament for the third straight year.

A Reporter's Persepctive: The State of Healthcare

Dan Margolies is editor in charge of health and education news at KCUR.  Dan joined KCUR in April 2014. In a long and varied journalism career, he has worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Business Journal, The Kansas City Star and Reuters. In a previous life, he was a lawyer. He has also worked as a media insurance underwriter and project development director for a video production firm.
Dan was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to Kansas City with his family when he was eight years old. He majored in philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis and holds law and journalism degrees from Boston University. He has been an avid public radio listener for as long as he can remember – which these days isn’t very long…

Sister Cities Organization in Kansas City

Kansas City enjoys a formal relationship with a dozen major cities around the world. These Sister Cities enhance the quality of life in our City and in its international partners through academic exchanges, art and music programs, cross-cultural awareness and the exploration of businss opportunities.   Mike Wood will discuss the Sister City movement as part of Kansas City's international scene that includes such other international nonprofits as People-to-People, International Relations Council, GlobalTies KC, the United Nations Association, and others.

 

 Mike Wood has lived, worked and traveled overseas for much of his adult life as a Peace Corps Volunteer, State Department official, health care administrator, UMKC academic, consultant, and most recently as a teacher of English to newcomers to the US. He is past President of the Sister City Association of Kansas City.

Patrick Klein

Kansas City Aviation Department 

Patrick Klein became Director of Aviation for the Kansas City Aviation Department June 1, 2016. In this role Klein oversees all aspects of the management, development, operation and maintenance of Kansas City International Airport and Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport. Klein is responsible for 550 employees and annual revenues of over $100 million. 

Klein has worked for the City of Kansas City, Missouri, for nearly 20 years, serving in a variety of management roles, and is well-positioned to step into this new position. Since 2013 Klein has worked with groups which have been studying future options for terminal modernization. This includes the mayor’s Airport Terminal Advisory Group, and the Airport Leadership Committee. Klein is familiar with all aspects of the airport’s operation and has worked extensively with Aviation Department staff.

Klein earned his bachelor’s degree from K-State and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Ashley Beard-Fosnow serves as the Executive Director of American Public Square. American Public Square is a nonpartisan nonprofit that seeks to change the tone and quality of public discourse. They organize programs that feature expert panelists and audience members with opposing views talking to each other, civilly, about controversial topics. Though these discussions may not always change minds, everyone walks away with a better understanding of the other side, a key step toward respect, compromise, and resolution.

A Clinical Perspective on Alzheimer's

Eric Vidoni, PT, PhD is director of the Outreach, Recruitment and Education Core for the University of Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Center and a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  Dr. Vidoni got his Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2001. In 2008, he completed his MSPT and PhD as part of a joint curriculum at the University of Kansas. With Dr. Swerdlow, he oversees the Kansas Dementia and Aging Research Training Program and regularly lectures to student physical therapists on the brain, motor control, aging and dementia. As core director, he organizes dementia-focused educational outreach opportunities for healthcare providers and the lay public throughout the region.

Dr. Vidoni also serves as the Scientific Director of the Physical Health Interventions Team (PHIT). PHIT serves as a clinical trials unit for lifestyle studies (primarily diet and exercise). By using the PHIT, investigators at KUMC can draw on over 30 year of collective experience with community and lab-based exercise and lifeystyle modification trials.

Jeff Shackelford is the Executive Director of Digital Sandbox KC, a proof-of-concept center designed to help move early-stage entrepreneurs from concept-to-commercialization. It is a regional approach to identifying very early technologies, which, with the right assistance from industry experts and seasoned entrepreneurs, can be advanced toward commercial viability. The mission of the Digital Sandbox is to connect innovation to industry with the goal of producing breakthrough products and services that have significant impact on the digital landscape.  

Since launching in 2013, Digital Sandbox has funded development projects for 100 local, early-stage start-ups and has assisted in securing over $52M in equity investment for 70 Sandbox companies.  These companies have created over 600 new Kansas City area jobs.  

Mr. Shackelford has a unique and diverse professional background with a rare combination of Fortune 100 enterprise experience coupled with entrepreneurial, start-up and early stage ventures that includes a successful track record in capital fund-raising of over $500M.

Mr. Shackelford holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Kansas.
